World Diamond Production
Mines across the world produce more than 100 million carats of diamonds annually. Diamond is the hardest naturally occurring mineral and one of the most beautiful gemstones on earth. Countries with the biggest diamond production share include Australia, South Africa, Russia, Congo and Botswana. World diamond reserves are about 750 million carats and Australia owns a big chunk of these reserves with approximately 210 million carats.
Three global diamond mining companies control more than half of global diamond production. One of these companies is British-Australian mining company, Rio Tinto. Over 90% of the world’s annual natural pink diamond supply is mined from one single source: Rio Tinto’s Argyle Mine. Aside from pink diamonds, Rio Tinto’s Argyle Diamond Mine also holds the monopoly of violet, red, and champagne coloured diamonds.
Rio Tinto’s Argyle Diamond Mine is set to end its operations by early 2021. Like all assets, the diamond market follows the laws of supply and demand. As such, when Argyle mine does close, the supply of pink diamonds will be even more limited. It’s unique and lucrative opportunity for investors to make huge returns in the medium-term.
Diamond Prices
Before buying a diamond, you must have a clear understanding of how it is priced. Firstly, know that there is no globally approved per gram pricing for diamonds. Diamonds are sold per carat.
To get the total diamond price, multiply the price per carat by the carat weight. This means purchasing diamonds with bigger carats would cost you more than purchasing smaller ones. Price jumps occur when a carat becomes in-demand in the market.
Aside from carat, other factors that affect pricing include colour, clarity, cut (proportions) and shape. Diamonds with visible tints or colours are generally considered flawed. They may fetch a lower market price than clearer stones with little to no visible tints. Cleanly cut and round-shaped or princess-shaped diamonds are buyer favourites and tend to be more pricey per market standards.
